Smiths Detection prides itself on innovation and the development of advanced technologies which detect and identify constantly evolving chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive (CBRNE) threats, as well as illegal and dangerous materials. Its detection capabilities provide customers with complete solutions for their CBRNE requirements. Programme and service packages ensure optimum performance throughout the lifetime of ownership.
Between 1997 & 2005, Smiths acquired a number of companies that were brought together to form Smiths Detection. The principal acquisitions were Graseby Dynamics – manufacturing chemical and biological warfare agent detection products; Environmental Technologies Group which complemented Graseby’s activities; Barringer Instruments, world leader in trace detection equipment; Heimann Systems making X-ray systems; and SensIR Technologies – infrared-based analysers.
Smiths Detection manufactures a broad range of security sensors for global military forces, emergency responders and security professionals, to detect and identify CBRNE threats. The high integrity solutions incorporate advanced technologies such as Ion Mobility Spectrometry (IMS), Fourier-Transform Infrared, LATE-PCR, Raman Spectroscopy, Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) and X-ray imaging.
In addition to CBRNE solutions for the military and emergency responders, Smiths Detection provides powerful X-ray systems to safeguard air travellers, the public at large and key groups such as Customs officers monitoring cross-border movements of people and freight. Discriminating X-ray technologies help in the fight against tax fraud, the movement of illegal substances and identification of hidden terrorist threats.
Smiths Detection will continue to focus on five key sectors: Transportation, principally aviation security; Ports & Borders security; Critical Infrastructure locations; Military protection; and products for Emergency Responders.
